The Comic
That’s right, it’s Thronos’ Birthday! The traditional day of fancy chairs, assorted monarchies, and suspicious mysteries that can be solved in thirty minutes or less!

Hopefully, these traditions also include cake. (Cake that is not a lie.)

The Living
Of the three to four rounds of paperwork I have to complete this summer, I am 100% finished with the first round and have begun to sort through the second. My godmother was in town this weekend and my family and I had a good time hanging out. We went to see a local musician and his band, and we ate heartily; I recommend both for anyone who likes cover bands or voracious eating.

No, I haven’t seen the new Star Trek–yet. I do intend to see it, and I will attempt to make it to a movie theater before the end of the coming week.

The Gaming
I’m still looking forward to having some time to obtain and play Dokapon Kingdom, but for the moment I’ve been blazing a tank-tread path through GTA2. It’s an old favorite, and I do recommend it to anyone who likes Nintendo-style 2D violence. If you do want to pick it up there is good news and bad news. The good news is Rockstar Games is giving it away for free; the bad news is that you have to submit personal information to get it. However, it does seem that some mild-mannered internet folks have disregarded that particular necessity.

Earth Day

I kid, I kid! In all fairness, there are many administrative professionals who care about the Earth, and plenty of non-administrative professionals who don’t!

Also, I’m sure at least a few people named Kevin must have a birthday today, so wish every Kevin you know a happy birthday and you’re bound to find one. What an eventful day! Earth Day, Administrative Professionals Day, Kevin’s birthday…I should just stay home from work to celebrate it all.

Birthday Blowout

It was Alynne’s birthday yesterday (yes, I know, another pseudonym!). I should probably have attempted to make reference to First Contact, but something a family member said made me think of the relationship between candles and birthdays instead.

As it stands, the tradition holds that we get one candle for every year we’ve been alive–maybe a few more from other wishing traditions. Small children get a few candles. Teenagers get their due. But once we’re past the teenage years we get lazy! People get an ill-defined, “large” amount of candles–or perhaps just a few, depending on the importance of birthdays within each particular family. By the time we’re octogenarians we get a few candles which we can (only feebly) blow out.

Shouldn’t this work in reverse? When I’m ancient, I don’t think I’ll care that much how many candles I’ve got but I will want to blow out however many candles I get. Similarly, children get a boat-load of fun out of blowing out candles, so why do we give them so few?

I decree that each person should be given a number of candles equal to 100 minus his or her age!
