The Hunter

Orion’s my favorite constellation, mostly because it’s so distinctive and bright that it’s the only one I can find. When it disappears for the summer, it bums me out. That’s prime stargazing time!

Orion actually has more stars that this (that make up a club, and some kind of shield I think). It’s probably completely the wrong angle to the horizon, among other inaccuracies, but I never said I was an astronomer.

Fun Facts!

Most constellation maps vary by culture, but the stars in Orion are recognized as a constellation almost universally. Native Americans saw the belt as the footprints of the god of the flea people, and Egyptians associated it with Osiris, god of the underworld. In the Southern Hemisphere (yes, he is so awesome that they can see him down there too) the constellation appears upside down from what we see in the Northern Hemisphere. Aboriginal Australians called it Julpan, the canoe.

/Thronos

I woke up yesterday morning and got ready for work only to discover that despite being a full week into the Spring season, there was a distinct Winter layer outside. This thin layer of snow had not only managed to obscure the coming green but had also frosted my windshield and other car windows.

To many, this would come as a shock; freezing temperatures in late March are not high on the frequency charts in (most) American towns.

In Western New York this is par for the course.
